Snorkeling sombrero beach : Bahia Honda State Park

A short 30-minute drive across the causeway from Marathon, the Bahía Honda State Park is on a beautiful island that boasts award-worthy beaches. This state park offers more than 500 acres of protected land, including bike paths and a historic bridge. It is also home to some of Florida’s best beaches, like Caloosahatchee Bay, where you can swim along sandy shores and explore underwater caves.

The park’s name actually translates to “deep bay’ in Spanish, and it’s no wonder why. Its shallow water teems with marine life, making it one of the most popular spots in the area. You can see manatees, turtles, dolphins, sharks, stingrays, eels and many other species here.

While below the surface may not look as colorful or populated as other reefs, the ocean floor holds its own magic. Tall seagrass beds and small schools of fish make for great snorkeling opportunities. Favorite beaches for snorkelers are Caloosa Beach, located on the Gulf Coast, and Sand Spur Beach on the Atlantic Ocean.
